Our Region

North Central Massachusetts consists of 27 communities: Ashburnham, Ashby, Athol, Ayer, Barre, Clinton, Devens, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Orange, Pepperell, Petersham, Phillipston, Princeton, Royalston, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster, and Winchendon. With three cities, as well as over 800 sq miles there is a lot of available space for new construction as well as downtown development.

Location

We are strategically located within an hour’s drive from metro Boston and thirty minutes from metro Worcester with accessibility via Route 2 serving as an east–west corridor with fast connections to Routes 495, 190 and 91 for north–south travel. Commuting is easy within the region and for Boston commuter’s, the MBTA offers train service from the new intermodal center in downtown Fitchburg extending into Boston with convenient stations in North Leominster, Shirley and Ayer. Even air travel is convenient in North Central Massachusetts with private jet service at the Fitchburg Regional Airport, Worcester Airport and with major international airports in Boston, Providence and Manchester, N.H., no more than 90 minutes away.

Seasonal Recreation in Central Massachusetts

The North Central Region is home to numerous state parks and forests, miles and miles of hiking and biking trails, snowmobile trails that ultimately connect with a system that runs into Canada, protected wildlife habitats, dozens of spots to canoe or kayak, even a place to make parachute jumps! North Central Massachusetts offers a unique landscape ranging from forests, rivers to rolling hills and Mt. We’re less than 30 minutes from Worcester, just over an hour from Boston, and a little over two hours to Stockbridge, in the heart of the Berkshires.  Manchester, NH is just over an hour from here, as is Providence, RI.  Brattleboro, VT is less than an hour and a half away.

Sports – New Englanders are sport enthusiast!

Massachusetts has some of the best Championship teams in the country. From the Stanley Cup Boston Bruins, World Series Red Sox, Superbowl New England Patriot’s and the Revolutionary Team, we love them all, including our regional teams.

If You’re Looking for an Affordable Place to Live – Choose North Central

Housing and related costs are much less here than in many parts of New England.   Just about any style of home and setting are available in one of the 26 towns comprising this region.    With our central location, diverse industries, and reasonable commute time by train (1:20 to 1:30 depending on train #) from Fitchburg to Boston’s North Station, or easy highway access to Worcester, there are many job markets available to you.

Regional Climate

If you like four seasons, there is no better place to experience that climate than in Central Massachusetts.

Central Massachusetts sees a wide variety of temperatures throughout the year.  Summers are warm with the average temperature in July above 80 degrees in the daytime and cooling to the 60’s in the evening.   Our refreshing and cool temperatures in the falls help create the most colorful fall foliage and if you like to outdoor winter sports, there is typically snow for several months with our notorious nor’easters!
